How to Highlight Your Home's Architecture with Uplighting

How to Highlight Your Home's Architecture with Uplighting

    What is Architectural Uplighting?

Uplighting involves placing directional light fixtures on the ground and aiming them upward to illuminate the front facade of your home. When done correctly, it creates dramatic shadows, emphasizes height, and draws attention to the best architectural features of your property.

    Grazing vs. Washing

There are two primary techniques we use in Sparks: grazing and washing. Grazing involves placing the fixture very close to a textured wall (like stone or brick) to create deep, dramatic shadows that highlight the texture. Washing places the fixture further back to provide a smooth, even glow across a flat surface like stucco.

    Highlighting Columns and Peaks

If your home features pillars, columns, or high roof peaks, these are prime targets for uplighting. Illuminating columns from the base makes your home look taller and more stately. Highlighting roof peaks draws the eye upward, giving your property a sense of grandeur that is invisible during the day.

    Avoiding Light Pollution

A professional design is just as much about where you don't put light. We carefully angle and shield our fixtures to ensure light stays on your home and doesn't spill into your windows or your neighbors' yards, maintaining a beautiful, glare-free aesthetic while complying with Dark Sky principles.
